Free Forging
Free Forging is a processing method that uses impact force or pressure to make metal deform freely in all directions between the upper and lower anvils without any restrictions, so as to obtain forgings with the required shape, size and mechanical properties, referred to as free forging.
The tools and equipment used in free forging are simple, with good versatility and low cost. Compared with Cast blanks, free forging eliminates defects such as shrinkage cavities, porosity and blowholes, making the blanks have higher mechanical properties. Forgings are simple in shape and flexible in operation. Therefore, it is of special importance in the manufacture of heavy machinery and critical parts.
Basic Processes of Free Forging
Free forging processes are divided into three categories: basic processes, auxiliary processes and finishing processes.
1. Basic Processes
These mainly cause a certain degree of plastic deformation of the metal to achieve the required shape and size, such as upsetting, drawing, punching, cutting, bending, twisting, etc.
2. Auxiliary Processes
These are pre-deformation processes carried out to facilitate the operation of basic processes, such as nipping and shouldering.
3. Finishing Processes
These are performed at the final temperature, such as removing surface irregularities and shaping the forgings. They are mainly used to reduce surface defects of forgings.
